Awakening
The way I see education dramatically changed as a result of being a pioneer in the MPC. School and the traditional system of education kill curiosity, which is the key to learn and gain knowledge. People stop asking; stop thinking own their own and start waiting. I realized this when we were waiting and expecting something from Albert in freshmen experience, a course I took my first year at UFM, we waited like we always did, we were just spectators waiting for something to happen. We weren’t the crazy ones, Bert was! After a couple of weeks later, I realized that Bert wasn’t crazy; he was inviting us to be ourselves in a free space, and to be independent. The Freshmen Experience unveiled my eyes and freed my mind, and most important of all, it changed the way I saw myself as a learner.
That class impacted me so much that I was willing to question more and have control over my learning in all classes, but it was impossible because we didn’t have that free space. A couple of friends and I were the weird ones, the rebels. Suddenly we were invited to participate in student run class. It sounded crazy at first because the facilitator was a student just a couple of years older than me but for the first time, I had participation in the content of a class. It was a wonderful experience; we would stay learning or dialoguing together even when the class was officially over. As everything in life, it came to an end. I was really frustrated to go back and face again the harsh reality. I was unsatisfied with my learning experience and definitely unhappy. I wanted to leave the country because I thought that would be the solution.
A couple of months after, we were told about MPC. I must be honest and say that at the beginning I was scared and confused, but after some dialogues and learning experiences I made my decision and accepted the invitation. I´ll share a fragment of my acceptance with you:
I’m accepting the invitation to be an MPC pioneer because I’m eager to be part of this way of learning, of thinking and acquiring knowledge by my own and sharing it with others. MPC is not only a college; it’s a space where freedom, learning and evolving will take place among students.
I believe that every single learner will provide something unique and vital to develop dialogues and knowledge. I’m very proud, happy and fulfilled to receive this life changing invitation; it will have a great impact on me and on a lot of human beings that would be part of it.
Being a pioneer is being part of the ones who’ll start this learning adventure and I really believe that MPC will grow as years pass by because everyone loves to learn and to be curious, they just are blind because of the way they’ve been taught.
We don’t have to be numb; we don’t have to wait. We can realize that there are other learning possibilities and that we can make them happen. There are two questions that we must ask ourselves, am I accepting the invitation? Am I extending it to others? I can answer both of these questions with a yes. Since I started my journey with MPC, I’ve been living learning and learning living. I can’t picture myself in any other program, MPC it’s a life experience, and I’ve learned things that now are part of me. I don’t memorize them and the forget them like I used to, I understand them and live them.
