Morning Meeting
Chacho facilitated the morning meeting of today, the announcements for today were: Diego is leaving before lunch because he has a therapy, Alejo invited us to the Start-Up Weekend at Paseo Cayala and Dylan is coming at 9:30 to discuss the first two chapters of Thinking Fast and Slow. After that, Chacho introduced us to CrossFit by sharing with us two videos: Let Me Tell You About CrossFit and 2011 CrossFit Games: Confidence. I was very impressed about the perseverance that CrossFit requires, it actually is about a whole new culture and environment in which you can pursue your goals. They inspired me to exercise everyday and I was overwhelmed about the passion they projected. Then Chacho taught us to do burpees, which seemed easy to do but they weren't easy at all. I was super excited to start the workout but I just did one correctly! It takes practice and perseverance just as they said :)
Individual Work
I used my time to continue reading "Thinking fast and Slow", this book is very very interesting because you get to actually think how you think. It's just weird because everything the author says it's so true! Also, I took part of my individual work to film each of the pioneers for the presentation we'll do on thursday. It was a very fun experience because I chose a different background for everyone, I can't wait to edit the video! However I'm missing some students, but tomorrow I'll tape them.
Thinking Fast and Slow with Dylan Evans
We discussed the first two chapters of Thinking Fast and Slow. So there are two types of thinking: fast /system 1(unconscious) and slow/system 2 (conscious). We thought that maybe with some practice you can system 1 something that was very system 2: driving or a second language. I learned that the hippocampus is where knowledge is stored. We also talked that rules, when practice, are accomplished effortlessly...that made me thought about our set of rubrics, which I think, eventually will become an authentic part of us. We also talked about will, the kind of will you require to wake up or exercise. Some people base their decisions on irrationality, like buying actions of a brand you don't know but you like the logo. This is very dangerous. We talked about optical and cognitive illusions, at first I didn't have clear the cognitive illusions, but then they explained me that it's the same of optical but with the thoughts. I can sat that it would be over-estimating or under-estimating something or someone. It can also be over-protecting something, etc. A curious fact of today is that our short-term memory can remember 7 items. The tyranny of the known occurs when there's a lack of data and we loose our capacity to take risks because of it.
Debrief of the Dialogue: We talked about interjections, if you're extremely aware of the dialogue you'll know when to interject and sometimes you'll just have to "jump-in" to make your point. We need to improve on our eye-contact with the speaker, avoid technology distractions, sleep the night before and scan the group in order to have a better dialogue. It's all about keeping the standards we have on a one-to-one dialogue. At MPC we have the possibility to raise our standards and have a voice of our own, which is a unique experience.
Euclid's
Javier T, Javier P and Kata presented their videos on propositions 4, 5 and 6. As the last time, we gave them some feedback. I suggested that we should do "Euclid's Video Rubrics", so that every person that has to do a video knows what are the standards because some of these videos repeated the weaknesses the last ones had. We also talked about changing the place of recording those videos because of the lack of space. I was thinking that maybe we could borrow a class or we can film it in a house, the issue is the chalkboard...but maybe we can borrow it too! We were also reminded that we have to have neatly done the first six propositions and we all have to be ready to present them.
Words and Rules: Steven Pinker
We read the preface and the first page of the 1st. chapter of the book "Words and Rules" by Steven Pinker. It seems really interesting, since I can recall I've always enjoyed grammar and words. I found really fascinating to play with words in millions of different ways, I play with them to communicate or express something. I can't wait to start reading it and I feel that it has a lot to do with The Trivium so we'll find many connections.
Group work
We worked on the presentation that we'll give on thursday. Each member of my group had something to develop today and we made our power point presentation. We were done very fast and now we just have to practice. We also had time to chat and laugh. The part I'll be presenting is this, which Chacho and I wrote:
"Our want for knowledge is unlimited; we strive to comprehend all the connections and combinations contained within each individual subject. We are aware that there’s not only one possibility but far too many. We relish surprise, innovation, creativity and diversity. Each student is unique and has something important to contribute to the rest. These contributions are the roots of new discoveries and perspectives. Along with this, each person must practice and reflect responsibility, respect and honesty (some of the many values of the MPC student). The MPC provides the environment in which all of this is possible, and the necessary tools that support our evolutionary thinking and reasoning. However, this program is also an on-going process of human growth and development because we understand that we live in a world of constant shifting and vicissitudes."
Debriefing
We talked about our dialogue with Dylan, it was wonderful. Also I think our main concern by now is the presentation so we'll arrange a space tomorrow to practice it. We also talked about the dress code and agreed that it will be semi-formal. It was a very productive day, however I feel very stressed out because I got a lot on my plate and I know I'll get behind. But there's no need to collapse...I can handle it!
